Since then, humans have been fascinated with finding their life purpose. Various writers, philosophers, and famous individuals expressed their different answers on the quest for a meaningful life. We believe that all of us – in one way or another — are bound and aiming for a certain goal. And this goal is the reason why despite the challenges and suffering in life, we are optimistic about facing the uncertain future. However, I realize that some people become confused when we talk about life’s purpose. As it is taught that purpose will give you overall happiness and satisfaction, it must be grand or permanent. It’s not. It can be a simple one like wishing to have a contented life. Or a bunch of wish lists where you pursue your different ambitions. It can be anything that gives you a reason to exist.
As I grew up, I realized that our purpose is just a motivational tracker that pushes us to continue. It is because existing in this world is like living in ambiguity. Life will teach you various paradoxes. It will make you feel that you can conquer the world. Yet it will slap you in the reality that you are just finite and limited. Life will show you that there’s a bigger world waiting for you to discover. But, it will be apparent to you that you are also tied with bigger responsibilities. Maybe reading this can be sad and scary for some. But if you look at it positively, you’ll know that this duality is what makes our life an enjoyable and wonderful experience. Life will teach us happiness, love, gratitude, heartaches, breakdowns, and breakthroughs.
While I was writing this, I recall a scene where I was sitting on the train and observing the passengers who were also traveling with me. From that day, I realized that our lives are like a representation of taking a long journey. We are on a voyage of endless discovery while we’re roaming toward our destination. However, like a passenger on the train, most of us are too drawn to our own destinations and stories — to the point that we forget that we are not the only ones who are navigating this life. So here I am, writing the 4 lessons I learned on how to find and fulfill our life purpose and achieve a meaningful life:
1. Focus on the journey, not the destination.
Your experience is more rewarding than achieving your goal. Do you know why? Because achieving your goals will only give short gratification, but the process will teach you lifeline lessons. As long as you continue breathing, there are infinite chances that you change or surpass your purpose. Someday, you only wish to find a job, but when you achieve it, you’ll aim for something higher. And it’s okay; it is part of our human nature. It is inherent in us to seek improvement and advancement in various aspects of our lives. So instead of only putting your attention on reaching your dream, enjoy and appreciate your present moment. Take a risk. Try new hobbies. Go with your friends. Travel alone. And challenge yourself to the uncomfortable. Remember, you only live once, but it doesn’t mean you can’t experience millions of good memories.
2. You are not alone. Find your tribe.
Individualistic tendencies become common for us when we are too drawn to achieving what we want in life. We think that only ourselves can understand our wins and battles. But let me tell you this. It’s not. So go out of your comfort zone and find a genuine connection with other people. Life doesn’t want you to discover yourself and the world only by yourself. It is meant to be shared, to be told, and to be learned with others. In Native American tradition, there’s a concept of spiritual or soul family.’ It is a theory that all of us are interconnected to a specific group of people that resonates with our mental, emotional, and spiritual energy. You will encounter them in different forms and scenarios – sometimes, in unexpected moments. And each of them imparts valuable lessons and spark your spiritual awakening.
Your soul family is out there waiting for you to open yourself. And when the right time comes, you will attract them at the perfect moment. It will be a magical experience — they have a sense of familiarity and match your energy. From there, you will realize that they are destined to cross your path. So don’t be afraid to accept them, to influence you, and when the time comes that they need to leave, be happy to let them go.
3. Sometimes, the best way is to go with the flow—life changes.
It has been practiced since our childhood to think about what we want to become when we are an adult. Most of us answer it to become a lawyer, a doctor, an astronaut, etc. These simple dreams forge our path to the small decisions we make. However, there will be a time when you will feel stagnant or lost if you experience a vicious cycle in your progress. But it doesn’t mean that you’re not moving. It is just that when things become out of control, you feel frustrated to resist and fear change. But change is inevitable. Instead of fighting the currents, trust that this flow will lead you to a meaningful life.
Detaching from a goal does not imply failure or giving up. It can be a conscious decision to stay open to what life offers and embrace new paths that may lead to unexpected and fulfilling outcomes. Acknowledge the new opportunities that may arise. And in doubt, take note that if you were not capable, opportunities would have never come your way.
4. The train will always lead you to the right destination.
Lastly, this is an affirmation that life will always lead us to the destiny we belong. Life, with all of its wonders and secrets, creates unique patterns in your experiences. That’s why no matter how hard you plan your life, it won’t happen as you expected it to be. There will be twists, turns, and external factors that will change the path. But it doesn’t mean misfortune; rather, it is destined to be like that. I believe it is the move of the Unknown – some may call it God, fate, or the law of the Universe. Whatever it is, it will whisper to you to trust and be patient. It will comfort you that whenever and wherever you are right now, you are moving to what your heart desires.
Life is an expedition for growth and discovery. And as we sail on this journey, we will encounter achievements and setbacks. Embrace this multitude of experiences, and you’ll notice how you evolve into the person you wish to become. Live your life authentically — listen to what life teaches you, connect genuinely to other people, attract your soul family, and trust your guts and inner voice. When you do this, you will have first-hand experience of how to live your life to the fullest.
